Peptides are a category, not a legal class
A peptide is simply a short chain of amino acids. That describes insulin, which has been prescribed for a century, and it equally describes compounds that exist only in preclinical research. Grouping them under one legal question does not work.
The useful question is narrower: is this specific compound approved, is it available through compounding, or is it neither?
The three tiers in practice
Approved medications: some peptide-based drugs have been through FDA review and are prescribed routinely. These are ordinary prescription medicines.
Compounded preparations: licensed compounding pharmacies can prepare certain medications for individual patients pursuant to a valid prescription. What is eligible for compounding changes over time — rules have shifted repeatedly in recent years, particularly around GLP-1 medications — so current status matters more than what was true last year.
Research-use compounds: compounds that have not been approved for human use are sold as laboratory materials. Selling them is generally legal; marketing them for human use is not, which is why vendors use "not for human consumption" language.
What this means for buying
Possession of research compounds is not typically the legal pressure point — the regulatory attention falls on sellers who market unapproved compounds for human use, make treatment claims, or misrepresent what they are selling.
For you as the buyer, the practical risks are different from legal ones: no oversight of whether a compound suits you, no verified purity, and no accountability if something is wrong with the product.
The rules move
This area changes. Compounding eligibility, enforcement priorities, and the approval status of individual compounds have all shifted meaningfully in recent years and will continue to.
